When someone asks you to give to them something you take for granted every day, when someone holds your hands and thanks you with tears in their eyes, when someone tells you in no uncertain terms that you are the answer to their prayers, it is impossible to say no.

So it is that the Literacy Leaps team is continuing their work in the Solomons Islands, affectionately known as the Samaria Project. This year the team will be building a Library / Classroom, the second for the team, in the village of Pitukoli to service the literacy needs of the Kuara Association. This builds upon previous years’ work of teaching local literacy and training Literacy Trainers, as well as arming them with tools and strategies to continue the work without us.

Why literacy? This valuable work rolls the stone away from the tomb. It reveals the risen Lord and His glory as King and Saviour, through the written word of God. Teaching others to read can be a life-saving gift.

It’s a big task this year. The building itself will require a team of men to work long, full days in the stifling heat. Added to this is the number needed to sort, label and catalogue an estimated 70 boxes of books. Then, if sufficient numbers take up the call, the team is hoping to initiate new literacy in its third region. The bottom line is this – about 20 team members and just shy of $10 000.

Each time I get to this point I start to panic. How do I deal with figures like that? How do I get that kind of interest? Where do I get that kind of money? Then I have to remind myself that all I am called to do is obey. This is God’s work, not mine. With the touch of His little finger, mighty things happen. I have seen it before, and now I get to see it again.

You can see it too. The ‘Solomon Snippets’ will be available monthly for you to follow our progress. You can see what has been achieved, who is doing what, and the effects that this project is having on others. Better yet, you can see what is needed for the completion of the project and perhaps be challenged to contribute in some way.
I’m now packing for my sixth trip, and am eagerly waiting for the next opportunity to not say no again.
